With it’s magnificent blue waters boasting a vast variety of marine life and corals, and with the island lined with top-notch resorts, Thailand’s Koh Samui has set itself as one of the best tourist destinations around Asia.

Beach fun and partying aren’t the only things to do here. If you have been looking at what to do and the best places to visit, there is a lot to see, do, and experience in this island paradise.

1. Lamai Beach Tours

Lamai Beach vies with Chaweng for title of Koh Samui’s prettiest beach, especially along its less coral-strewn southern stretches.Less developed than Chaweng, and therefore more tranquil and relaxed,

Lamai offers year-round swimming and the interesting formations of the granite Grandmother and Grandfather rocks.

It’s a good spot to look for resort accommodation and tasty restaurants on Koh Samui.

2. Big Buddha Temple

Apart from the beaches, Koh Samui’s distinctive icon is the golden Big Buddha Temple – or Wat Phra Yai – visible above the red-tiled rooftops on the island’s north coast.

The 12 meter (40 foot) Buddha statue is visible from several kilometers away, and even from an airplane if you’re arriving or departing by air.

The temple, shops and restaurants cluster at the base of the statue, and ceremonial stairs lead up to the top for terrific island views.

3. Ang Thong National Marine Park)

The 42 karst islets of Ang Thong National Marine Park (Mu Koh Ang Thong) fill a picturesque oceanscape spanning more than 95 square miles. These limestone pinnacles harbor secluded powdery beaches, sheer cliffs, and caves, all ripe for exploration.

Only two of the islands in this craggy vista are inhabited—the large Koh Wua Talap, with its park rangers, restaurant, and rustic tourist bungalows, and Koh Paluay, an island with a fishing community of traditional sea gypsies—otherwise, it’s all pristine nature.

Tropical and dry evergreen forests of the interior area house oriental pied hornbills, little herons, monkeys, and bats. In the shallow waters, dolphins, whales, and otters can sometimes be found.

4. Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks (Hin Yai/Hin Ta)

Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks – or Hin Yai/Hin Ta – are rocky outcrops on Lamai Beach.

Often photographed and commented on, the rocks bear an uncanny resemblance to male and female genitalia. The rocks are set on a lovely stretch of beach, and create tranquil rock pools when the tide is in.

Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks – or Hin Yai/Hin Ta – are a little south along the sands of Lamai Beach, on Koh Samui’s southern east coast. From the road, follow the trail lined with souvenir stalls to the rocks.

5. Na Muang Waterfall

The cool sound of water tumbling down a rocky cliff face and into a pool greets you at Na Muang Falls.

Nestled amongst the island’s central mountains, the falls have two tiers: a lower stretch easily reached by foot and a higher tier that’s best reached by hiking or riding on elephant back. The lower tier of falls is suitable for swimming.

The road to the lower falls is lined with food stalls and souvenir vendors, and elephant handlers offer their animals for rides to the top tier.

6. Koh Samui Island Cruise and Snorkel Full-Day Tour

Discover the beauty of Koh Samui’s unspoiled beaches on this island cruise and snorkel full-day tour. Float along pristine shorelines, over crystal blue waters and swim and snorkel with brightly colored tropical fish. Enjoy a traditional Thai lunch with fellow travelers and your friendly guide as well as round-trip hotel transportation.

Depart from Bug Buddha Beach and make your way past Tong Sai, Cheong Mon and Chaweng Beach as you make your way to Green Peace Island. Disembark from your boat for a snorkel, a swim or some time soaking up sun on the picturesque shores of this remote destination.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite you’ll enjoy a savory lunch and a bit of free time to enjoy the island before making your way back to mainland and your Koh Samui hotel.

7. ATV Quad Safari on Koh Samui

Explore the off-road terrain of Koh Samui on an ATV tour. Book a 1- or 2-hour adventure to tackle challenging tracks and discover scenic trails that give you a new perspective of the island. This is a great way to give yourself an exciting break from the beach. Beginners and advanced riders are welcome.

Your tour starts with hotel pickup for the 10- to 30-minute ride to the northern area of the island where the tour takes place.

Drive your own ATV, a quad bike used for off-road travel with low-pressure tires that allow you to traverse more terrain than other types of vehicles. You’ll receive instruction from the staff on how to operate your ATV. After practicing a few rounds, set off on your exploration along dirt tracks.
